Weave must be fixed

On Feb. 14, the Grass Valley City Council heard public comment about allowing the performance of a critical intersection, Idaho-Maryland at East Main, to degrade further than it already has been so that several proposed development projects can be built.

Those who want to lower the standard for that intersection justify their position by saying that the fix for it, a roundabout, is on the way, so the degradation of the intersection will be only temporary. The roundabout, however, does not get to the heart of the traffic problem in that area – the dangerous weave created by freeway ramps that are too close to each other.

Even with a $1 to $1.5 million roundabout in place, the weave is still projected to “fail” in 2012. Whenever it fails, when people start dying on the freeway, a much more expensive project needs to be in place to prevent CalTrans from closing either the onramp or the offramp. Perhaps this solution will require rebuilding the roundabout or replacing it with a signal. We do not know. It would be poor planning to spend more than $1 million on the roundabout without first being clear about the design, and financing, of the long-term solution.
