We must safeguard freedoms, liberty

Extremism in the defense of liberty is justifiable, to paraphrase Mr. Barry Goldwater, former GOP presidential candidate and “Big Brother is watching you,” written by George Orwell in his “1984.”

These ideas are now being realized and activated with the Homeland Security Act and Total Information Awareness program. This legislative “tour de force” has the potential to bring about a slow, progressive erosion and possible destruction of our basic and cherished constitutional freedoms, all in the name of “security.” When will the American public awaken and protest these chillingly subtle and dangerously abominable threats to liberty?

From the secret arrests, military summary tribunals, incommunicado detention and imprisonment culminated by these new programs in the name of “security,” we are allowing ourselves to take on the guise of the people that we are against. We have to reconsider and regain our equilibrium and not become the enemy, i.e. terrorists, in the efforts to defeat terrorism. Not to do so will accomplish the goals of the terrorists i.e. demoralization by intimidation, violence and terror.

We must not permit this to take place, and we must continue to safeguard our freedoms and liberty.
