We dare not be lazy

I was surprised to read in the July 12 issue of The Union, the article: “Nevada City to denounce Patriot Act?”, where Grass Valley Mayor Patti Ingram doesn’t see the connection between federal government and local government. She is quoted as saying that the Patriot Act is not a local issue, and that “those types of things are personal beliefs.”

While it’s unclear as to what “those types of things” refers to, the Patriot Act is not about personal beliefs, it’s about personal freedom. And of course the federal government affects local government. It’s time to study the Patriot Act and fully understand all the issues. There are many online resources to do your research, but I suggest asking a librarian’s help (and opinion) on the Patriot Act. We dare not be lazy when our constitutional rights are being eroded.
