We cannot focus only on local issues

(Nevada City) Councilman Cottrell is right. We can’t focus on city issues while ignoring global issues.

The Patriot Act is a case in point. Under the pretense of fighting terrorism, the government now has the right to read our e-mail and monitor what books we check out of the library. The Secretary of State even has the power to designate any group in America a terrorist organization. And with powers granted by the Homeland Security Act, the government now has the power to forcibly vaccinate us, a power which is now being used. Furthermore, the Freedom of Information Act, which would have provided some defense to citizens whose rights had been violated, cannot be used.

I’m sure that supporters of war would like us all to turn our eyes away from global conflict. Those who create chaos depend on a passive population. As Henry Thoreau said in his essay on civil disobedience, “(t)he broadest and most prevalent error requires the most disinterested virtue to sustain it.”
