Vote ‘yes’ on Measure E

Like a lot of voters, The Union is taking its time in making up its mind about candidates in the March 2 California primary election. But there is one issue on the ballot that we don’t have any hesitation endorsing right now: Measure E.

Measure E is a $394 million bond issue for the improvement of Sierra College. With campuses or centers in Grass Valley and Truckee in Nevada County, as well as at nearby Rocklin and Roseville, the health and growth of this community’s college are crucial to the future of our citizens, both young and old.

Yes, it will cost a little, and in a time of ever-increasing taxes, that’s an important issue. But at $19 per 100,000 of assessed property value, that’s $36 for the average taxpayer – not to mention that this is the first Sierra College bond request since 1959.

What would Nevada County get for its money?

For starters, more classrooms for the Grass Valley campus – which has been at capacity since the day it opened – and a permanent campus in Truckee instead of rental space.

An expanded local campus is essential if we hope to lure businesses – especially high-tech businesses – to Nevada County, allowing the training of local students for local jobs, and fostering a thriving economy instead of a bedroom or retirement community for Sacramento.

The bond measure would not be spent for salaries or operating expenses but for upgrading and building classrooms, and expanding programs.

At the Nevada County campus, there are plans for a Nursing Lab, a Public Safety Training Center, and a Health/Physical Education Center. Already known for its computer training, the campus could upgrade its technology. And a proposed performing arts facility also would offer new opportunities for community involvement.

An investment in Sierra College is an investment in the future of Nevada County. We urge a “yes” vote on Measure E on March 2.
