Volunteer Action Center

The Nevada County Volunteer Action Center matches the time and talents of volunteers with opportunities to help individuals and nonprofit organizations that provide human services. For information on the following positions or other volunteer jobs, call 272-5041, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weekdays; or stop by 11743 Maltman Drive, Grass Valley.

Thrift shop workers

Lots of volunteers needed at this local thrift store that helps support women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Sort, mend and price merchandise, create displays, cashier, pick up donations. Two-hour shifts Monday-Saturday. Training will be provided.

Office assistant

If you are interested in the law, then this busy county legal office wants your good office skills. Several volunteers are needed for typing, filing, copying and scanning documents. Training provided and time is flexible.

Classroom assistance

Several volunteers needed to work with small groups of children using teacher-directed materials. Training provided and time is flexible.

Computer tutor

Organization that provides the assistance and services to allow disabled people to live independently needs your help. Volunteers needed to teach computer basics, including the Internet and e-mail. Tutoring will be one-on-one, in one-hour sessions. Training provided and time is flexible.

Reading helper

Your help a few hours a week will make a big difference to some first- and second-graders. Supportive, caring, patient volunteers are needed to listen to children read and help them with the ABCs. Hours are flexible and training will be provided.

Secretary to board of directors

Local organization that works to ensure that our county’s natural beauty is accessible to people with disabilities needs your help. Record and type minutes for monthly board meetings, participate in board decisions, and become familiar with nature trail. Meetings are held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
