Unprotected speech

The role of our government is to administer, not to rule. We are now, everyone of us, on notice that our phones are being tapped to ensure “the terrorist do not win” and to be cautious as to what we say privately or in print in our newspapers about the new role of our new rulers.

The proclamation of support read by the Public Works director at last week’s council meeting naming staff members in support of Mark Miller was a chilling reminder of times not so far removed when Un-American Activities meant you were in favor of retaining your unalienable right to dissent, and you and your family’s livelihood depended directly on your unfaltering public support. Mark is certainly no King George, but we are reminded everyday locally, by little actions, how, nationally, consent looms over dissent.
