Unpleasant changes

I was able to make my way home for a holiday visit and what I found made me sad. Nevada City has lost its soul. As a third-generation NC guy who left over a decade ago, I looked forward to visits over the years; however this visit revealed a town void of the unique culture and grace that I grew up with. In place of these treasures I found rude people, bad driving and sidewalks littered with throngs of young street people complete with dogs and the stench and prizes that both leave behind. I wonder how long it will be before a tourist steps out of J.J. Jackson’s satisfied with a generous de-cashing experience only to be attacked by a free-range pit bull?

Some old-timers argued that the completion of the Golden Center Freeway brought a cultural decline to the community. Perhaps apathy and selfishness have become the freeway to further decline today. I find it a bit odd to see real estate prices at an all-time high at the same time the patina of the little town is at an all-time low.
