‘Unpatriotic’ label a tactic

An open letter to those who would label me “anti-American:”

I would remind the reader of two things. First, this country was founded by dissenters. Remember the famous Thomas Jefferson quote: “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” Dissent is vital in a free society. Second, labeling as unpatriotic those with dissenting viewpoints is a common tactic of tyrants and fascists. The Nazis did it in the ’30s; Joseph McCarthy did it in the ’50s.

If you would like to understand where I get my dissenting viewpoint, I would challenge you to look a little deeper than Fox, CNN, and your local news. There are mountains of data supporting positions like: the Iraq war was unnecessary and is bleeding this country dry; that the wiretapping is illegal and unnecessary; that our $8.3 trillion and growing national debt is reckless and unnecessary; global warming is a grave threat to life as we know it; that our Congress is being bought and paid for by multinational corporations, etc. People aren’t making this stuff up because they have nothing better to do. Supporting data is everywhere if you will only open your eyes to it.
