Undeveloped land a necessity

The writers of several recent letters to the editor have given dire warnings that, though NH2020 has been killed, it’s likely to raise its nasty head again.

I hope they are right.

NH2020 was for the citizens of Nevada County, not for the United Nations or any other of the current bugaboos. It was for us, all the residents of this county, and a group of protesters has managed to kill it for us.

No matter who ends up on the Board of Supervisors – Drew or Bruce, Izzy or Robin – the board will be faced with the necessity of buying open land which will not be developed for the benefit of everyone in the county. Nobody wants to lose the beauty we are sustained by, not even those who do a lot of fretting about the money value of their private property.

We’ll still have plenty of land for development, but it needs to be balanced by land set aside to be kept open, and now is the time to do it.
