Unanswered questions about Sept. 11, 2001

As Henry Kissinger prepares to head an investigation into attacks on the Pentagon and Trade Center towers, I have some bothersome questions of my own.

Given that there had been intelligence warnings of just such an attack, why then, after the first plane hit the north tower, were there no fighter jets scrambled to intercept the second plane, which entered Manhattan nearly 30 minutes later? Even a small aircraft receives immediate intervention when flying over a sensitive area such as Camp David.

Why also was President Bush talking casually with Florida school kids after already being informed of the north tower event? Should he not have retreated to a secure location from which to direct further activities with his full attention, such as the need to intercept additional stray aircraft? Past intelligence had anticipated such an event, and even if those reports were lost in the shuffle, that first strike should have alerted everyone concerned that the threat was real, and immediate action was required to prevent further scenarios.

I have heard but cannot confirm that our air defense system was in “stand-down” on that morning. If anyone knows about this, please enlighten us.

It’s hard to know just what to make of it all. Is our national defense in the hands of bungling idiots, or are we poised for a descent into a “Fourth Reich”? The press seems to have avoided these questions totally. Why? How liberal can they be?
