Ugly American

The president deserves credit for making his priorities and values clear to the American public, and to the rest of the world. Most recently he has done so very graphically in dollar terms:

1. His self-glorification inauguration celebration has been budgeted for a modest $40 million, which does not include the cost of an extraordinarily elaborate security program conveniently paid for out of the underfunded Homeland Security budget;

2. To demonstrate world leadership in aid for the victims of the tsunami disaster, he increased the initially proposed $4 million to a generous $15 million. Japan’s pledge of a half billion dollars embarrassed him into increasing our pledge to $350 million.

The term “Ugly American” is not new, but G. W. Bush has given it a new significance.
