U.S. should stop the carnage

When is enough, enough? History tells us that war is the extreme in the exercise of a nation’s foreign policy. Be it for territory, self protection or honor. Recent letters to the editor, previous editorials and many columnists express concern, fear and abomination at the on-going Israel-Palestine war. Although undeclared, it is a war.

By the application of war, we (America and Western allies) have successfully intervened and restored peace in Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia as well as the recent effort in Afghanistan.

Why have we not applied the same formula to Israel and Palestine and obtain an immediate cease fire, create a non-killing zone, resume the stalled negotiations and declare Jerusalem an open “neutral” city.

The same degree of leadership, courage and action displayed in reacting to the Sept. 11, 2001, event by Mr. Bush is needed to stop the carnage taking place.

Not to act after witnessing the butchery, terror and death occurring after two years and escalating is to make us all silent accomplices to this continuing religious-political madness.

Regardless of deploring this “war,” it is time for us to once again organize another “peace-keeping and enforcement” coalition and intervene to partition and neutralize the combatants and bring this collective madness to a halt and restore “peace.”
