Two theaters will be missed

It’s a sad day for Nevada County when we lose Off Broadstreet theater and the City Centre Playhouse all in one year. Fortunately, Off Broadstreet will eventually be rebuilt, but closing the doors of the City Centre Playhouse (formally The Studio Theatre) marks and end of an era. City Centre Playhouse for over a decade opened its doors to small community theater groups.

By doing so, it gave people the opportunity to experience live theater in an intimate setting while providing the chance for people to act or work behind the scenes of theater just for fun. In the The Union article of April 2, Linda Stevens was quoted, “I’m sad about the theater over there, and Gra Neva, those things.” Said Stevens, “I’m hoping they look at staying in Grass Valley somehow.” Speaking for Chris Harada Productions, it would be wonderful to stay in Grass Valley, but where? Where can you find a small venue offering reasonable rent and adequate parking? Most people don’t realize that royalties paid to produce plays are based on the seating capacity of a theater. The smaller the venue (80 seats), the easier it is for the production to meet its costs.

A small, intimate theater also provides a special connection between the audience and the actors. Community theater is important to our community. It not only offers entertainment, but a learning source and friendship to everyone involved. Chris Harada Productions among others would like to continue providing quality community theater here in Grass Valley. Any location suggestion would be greatly appreciated. All of us at Chris Harada Productions are saddened by the closure of the City Centre Playhouse. We hope the community will consider what the impact this closure will be and help us to find a new location. We can be contacted at 274-0462, or e-mail us
