Two columns bring different responses

Recently The Union published two columns that should make all responsible citizens of Nevada County take pause. One of them promoted compassion and healing and the other bias and ignorance.

Both, in their own way, illustrated the darker nature of far too many of our citizens. One was a fine example of writing and held out the possibility of hope and the other further divisive nonsense. One an example of the kind of journalism that The Union can be proud of and the other the kind usually found in fringe publications. These columns exposed how racially and socially repressed we still are as a society and how politically immature. One of these columns was thought-provoking, healing, moving, positive in nature and one was none of the above. Both show that Nevada County has a lot of racial and political maturing ahead.

It was upsetting to have Millete Birhanemaskel [Other Voices, “You don’t look like a regular Negro,” Jan. 3] point out how ignorance and prejudice still live on. So sad. Mr. Jim Edwards’ column [Other Voices, “Where was Barbara Boxer’s anger under Clinton?,” Jan. 8] clearly shows how politically naive many of our citizens are. His article elucidates the divide in this county and the country at large offering only more of the same.

Congratulations to The Union for one of these. As for the other…..
