Turn the tables

Lately the ACLU has been getting a lot of negative press from the conservatives who seem to worry that someone (maybe the grinch) is trying to steal Christmas. But what they don’t seem to comprehend is that the ACLU would be on their side if the tables were turned.

Let’s suppose a school teacher wants to put up a big satanic altar and have all the kids in class sing satan carols together. Do you think the teacher should have the right to do that? Well, neither does the ACLU.

It’s a similar situation when a teacher, or Boy Scout troop leader, or anyone in authority forces a single religion on everyone, whether that religion is Christianity, satanism, or anything in between.

The founding fathers knew that marrying a single religion to the government is just the wrong thing to do. What if we had a satanic president who wanted to force his ideological views on the rest of the population? And what if a judge ruled against satanic prayers in schools in a case brought by the ACLU? Would he still be labeled as an “activist judge”? Would you still condemn the ACLU?

Tolerance is one thing … government-sponsored religion is another.
