Truckee woman attempts suicide

A Truckee woman remained in critical condition Monday after her failed suicide attempt in the Truckee jail last weekend.

Karen Berry, 43, was still comatose, a supervising nurse at Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee said.

Berry apparently tried to hang herself Sunday morning with a bedsheet in her cell after being arrested a second time in less than 24 hours, Sheriff Keith Royal said.

Truckee police first arrested her at 9:22 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of public drunkenness, and she was released on her own recognizance at 4:27 a.m. Sunday. At 8:17 a.m. that same day, she was arrested again on suspicion of shoplifting. At 10:37 a.m. – 13 minutes after making a phone call – she was found in her cell hanging from a noose made from a bed sheet.

The case remains under investigation.
