Trails plan workshop on Wednesday

In a couple of years – June 2004 to be exact – Nevada County supervisors are due to approve a plan for rural recreational trails the county would like to create.

That process starts Wednesday night.

The county Planning Department will hold a workshop in Grass Valley’s Condon Park to kick off its two-year trail-planning process. “This is the first public hearing,” said J. P. Tindell, county recreation planner.

The meeting will feature maps showing potential trail corridors, such as one connecting Grass Valley to Nevada City.

“The intention of this is … to connect our population centers,” Tindell said.

“It also tries to take advantage of some of the irrigation ditches which we know people are already taking advantage of” as hiking and biking trails, she said.

Participants in Wednesday’s meeting will break up into discussion groups.

Public input will help determine the final list of trails the county intends to approve. Many statewide grants are available to fund trail construction, Tindell said.

“One of the major obstacles for applying for those grants is we don’t have a … well thought-out plan,” she said. “After we have some priorities … then we’ll go after money.”
