Tom Ridge shuffle

While most Americans are grappling with the concept of social justice and standards of corporate ethics overseas, the mayors of Grass Valley and Nevada City lock-stepped to the Tom Ridge shuffle in support of the Patriot Act on Monday, Aug. 9.

True patriots of an act that gives rise to the thinking that this act is the natural extension of the Pledge of Allegiance, and that in degrees we will be accepted into the fundamentalist order of a goose-stepping Republican Party with bow ties and hard-rimmed caps. A patriotism that puts a shiny ribbon on the title of being a citizen and a new hat on uniting a domestic spy agency, giving the CIA, the sheriff, or chief of police impunity to spy on people who have just recently given up their citizenship to become a patriot.

I fear, though, it gives credibility to claims “the other side is the unholy aggressor,” and neglects our birthright for a secular pledge.

Neither picture is acceptable to our American spirit and gives rise to petitions of redress by citizens, patriotically exhibited in the council chambers on Monday, Aug. 9.
