Timber industry propaganda fouls The Union’s garden page

Since when is industrial clear-cutting a subject fitting for The Union’s Home & Garden section? Two months in a row I open my weekend edition of The Union to find timber industry propaganda fouling the garden section in the form of articles by Eric Carr. He openly advocates clear-cutting, claiming that it may be necessary to control bark beetle infestations and annosus fungus. He fails to mention, however, that bark beetles and annosus are attracted to stumps and slash, and are spread by logging.

Carr’s most recent piece implies that clear-cutting can reduce fire severity. Of course, he doesn’t cite one piece of scientific evidence for this claim, and there’s not a credible fire scientist in the nation who would agree with him. In fact, scientists point out that clear-cutting is one of the biggest causes of increased fire severity because it converts mature stands into dense thickets of small, flammable trees.

If logging companies want to remove the largest, more fire-resistant trees to make a short-term buck, then they should just say so. Don’t insult the public’s intelligence by claiming that you’re cutting down mature trees supposedly to protect us all from fire.
