This country better than that

I wanted to respond to a letter-writer’s opinion on the lesbian couples’ marriage announcement. First, I think it was a nice thing to do for The Union to run the announcement in the marriage section. The Union is usually more conservative than that. Good work!

For the letter-writer, I think her opinion was rather mean-spirited. She obviously doesn’t understand the concept of equal protection under the law. As a gay man in a relationship for almost 13 years, getting married was an amazing experience. Even though we had to stand in line for 10 hours with a bunch of hateful people … yelling at us. I wonder how many straight people would get married under those circumstances?

We as gay Americans just want to be free to love and to become a family with those we love. Civil unions have no real meaning in this country or any other. Didn’t we all go through this separate but equal stuff before? This country is better than that, and I think if the letter-writer really thought about it, she would agree.
