There are better solutions

We have a significant problem with drug and alcohol abuse among high school students in this county, yet we continue to do nothing about the underlying causes.

Punishing and blaming parents/schools makes things worse. Catching the “criminal” or other adults who manufacture and sell alcohol and drugs to minors does no good … more are waiting in line to continue selling. Taking teenagers to counseling does no good. “Just say no” doesn’t work. Putting teenagers on pharmaceutical drugs is no different than allowing them to use street drugs. The side effects are sometimes worse. And, sadly, there is not even one child psychiatrist in the county willing to treat teens. What does work? The ancient wisdom found in herbal medicine (Chinese and Ayurveda) used to calm anxiety, treat anger and alleviate depression is a good start. Exercise and a nutritious diet are essential for good brain chemistry! Emotional and spiritual connections with others are also an important consideration. A calm, less stimulating environment will also calm the nervous system. We know these things. Why do we keep turning to ineffective solutions to solve what is really a health problem?
