The Union’s editorial on lawsuits excellent

The Union’s recent editorial referencing the flurry of lawsuits filed by a Nevada organization called Americans With Disabilities Advocates was discerning and courageous. The differences between the contributions of FREED and the money-raising plethora of lawsuits by “advocates” was carefully differentiated. Nonetheless, being critical of anything or anyone representing themselves as being “advocates” of people with disabilities is pretty slippery turf. Commendable job. The Union’s editorial staff should take a bow.

Now the fallout from this cottage industry of cashing tickets arising from well meant, if poorly drafted, law like the federal Americans with Disabilities Act of some years ago has negatively impacted the heretofore well attended, respected and enjoyed annual Nevada County Harvest Wine Trail. At least two of the participant wineries have felt it necessary to withdraw from the event for fear of more legal actions from “advocates.” Most disturbing.

The executive director of FREED quickly distanced that organization (which I fully believe continues to warrant our respect and support) from the reckless filing without warning of lawsuits against ” … more than 100 California wineries during the last two years.” The best one can say about these suits is that they appear to be a reckless use of the courts for questionable motives. Again, The Union and FREED are clearly the good guys in this unfortunate affair, as I believe are the local wineries blindsided by this legal mugging. Each of these deserve our respect and support. “Advocates”‘ motivations and actions appear rather more questionable.
