The Union should be ashamed
Excuse me, but either you or your readers have been had.
Last week, The Union ran a pair of lengthy articles detailing the results of a poll commissioned by, paid for and edited by Sierra Pacific Industries. The Union has claimed, in great detail, that it’s by a”Democratic” pollster and detailed how it must be unbiased, despite the paper’s admission that the pollster says he grew up in SPI chairman Red Emmerson’s hometown and did this partially as a favor to him. Now that’s what you can call impartiality.
The Union plastered a neutral headline (cute trick) on the article, then displayed the biased results, barely noting who paid for it. May we repeat, The Union devoted two huge articles to a poll paid for, commissioned by and edited by Sierra Pacific Industries. Such editorial collusion is typical in company towns, and The Union must firmly believe that’s the case. In fact, the newspaper went out of its way to justify the SPI poll. Would you dare print the results of a scientific, citizens-oriented, environmentally friendly SYRCL-commissioned poll in such two-day, multiple column-inch detail? You know you wouldn’t; you’d figure it would look too, too ecological and, thus, controversial. And that after the “Conversation About the Forest” debacle. Well, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Ashamed.
Yet you, The Union, got a “favorable” rating in the SPI-sponsored poll. Makes you feel really nice and fuzzy inside, huh? You got what you wanted. So did SPI. They want the current Nevada County Board of Supervisors majority out, so SPI can continue clearcutting with abandon, and you’re helping them get what they want. In other words, The Union sucked up, big-time, to prove you’re still another corporate chump, in an increasingly corporate town. Then again, maybe the poll results – among only those residents who have voted in the past three elections – back you up.
