The Union should back ZIP campaign

Looking at the map of western Nevada County, it is obvious that Penn Valley extends to the country line between Nevada and Yuba counties. During the 1940s and WWII when Beale Air Force Base was developed, the residents of this western-most area were assigned Yuba County (Smartville) addresses and ZIP Codes. These addresses have now become a burden to this growing community.

The Nevada County supervisors and Congressman John Doolittle have supported a request for a ZIP Code Boundary Review which seeks recognition of the area as part of Penn Valley, with addresses to reflect that fact. The community is not placated by Hugo Francia’s renaming the area Big Oak Valley. Residents understand that 95977 remains a Yuba County ZIP Code no matter what “temporary band-aid” makes it appear that it is Nevada County.

This community hopes The Union newspaper will be more responsive to residents of westernmost Nevada County who have been forced into a Yuba County identity. Please take a second look and get on the side of your most-western Nevada County readership.
