The ‘Ownership Society’

President Bush promotes an “Ownership Society” and the need to reform Social Security. Is he communicating honestly or not telling us that this is about a philosophical change? No doubt, changes need to be made to Social Security. Solvency is either 18 or 50 years, depending on whom you believe. Alternatives exist other than privatization, which could leave the less able behind. Why privatization? Republicans celebrate individual opportunity. Work hard, take care of yourself. Government should support your endeavors or get out of the way. If equality and the middle class shrink, so be it. Democrats see government as a way to create more economic equality, a larger middle class and if efficiency suffers, so what? How nice if our president would admit promoting a philosophical change and an On Your Own Society. Then if we agree with this philosophy, we know clearly what we support. But the president knows that many voters won’t decide what they support until they are bombarded with misleading marketing blitzes. Majority support of clearly understood policies is democracy. Letting understanding be dictated to us isn’t, and it is our own fault if we allow it.
