The age of lies

Marketing is a big thing these days, maybe the only thing. Professor Douglas Piirto’s piece in The Union on March 18 falls into that category.

Piirto tries to sell the idea that only human “management” can save our public forests from former human mismanagement.

Our forests managed themselves magnificently before we got here. It’s men who need to be managed. Forests know how to be forests. Men want to make them into tree farms.



It’s the awful dishonesty that sticks in the craw, the intentional misleading of the reader to think that the selling off of our national heritage is, in fact, something good.

This is marketing, advertising, propaganda – innately dishonest. Present lies as the truth long enough, and people will believe them: Social Security is on the brink of bankruptcy; Saddam was a threat to the U.S.; we’re killing Iraqis to bring freedom and democracy; harvesting our forests will bring them back to health.




This is the Age of Lies, and our job is to tell the lies from the truth. To start, think how those statements would change if someone didn’t want to make a profit from each situation.
