Thanksgiving 2006

Give credit to the Founding Fathers for the feast of Thanksgiving! Its tradition started in 1621 as a public appreciation for a good harvest. President George Washington proclaimed in 1789 the last Thursday of November “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many favours of the Almighty God.”

He strongly advised the people to ” beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, the increase of science, and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.”

President Lincoln made in 1863 a similar proclamation for ” a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwells in the Heaven,” and concluded with an encouragement ” to implore fervently the imposition of the almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it soon … to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and the Union.” His message applies equally to us as we celebrate the Thanksgiving 2006.
