Thanks, Sam

The people of Nevada County owe Sam Dardick a vote of thanks for his recent column in The Union explaining what NH 2020 is all about. The nine points he covered were very concise, and I don’t think that anyone can argue with them. (Well, I guess Drew Bedwell and Robin Sutherland could and would.)

Where did Ms. Sutherland come from and learn so much in such a short length of time? (She read it in The Union.)

If one were to ask those who oppose NH 2020 why they oppose it, all you will hear is the same rhetoric that is put out by Mr. Bedwell and other opponents of the process. Before this letter, I confess that I couldn’t explain why I was for it or against it. I have read both sides and have felt all along that it was a good planning tool to up-date the General Plan.

As Sam Dardick pointed out, there are adequate federal and state laws protecting the property rights of the citizens of this country. The people of Nevada County must vote on any fiscal impact. There are already federal and state laws in place to protect endangered species. (If you don’t think so, just try to change the use of land you own and you will find that there will have to be an environmental impact study, your neighbors will have to approve the change, and other current restrictions go on and on.)

I would urge everyone to read Sam’s letter in the March 9, 2002, edition of The Union if you really want to know the truth about NH 2020 planning process.
