Thanks for letter

I want to congratulate (letter-writer) on the thoughtful letter Feb. 8, tying together international population assistance and the environment. It’s not a question of population control, but of giving the means to women and their families to plan the number and spacing of their children just like most of us do here in this country. I notice she urges the U.S. to support the United Nations Population Fund, which the Bush administration has not done for the last three years. This puts us way out of the mainstream. One hundred sixty-six countries allocated money to UNFPA last year. The American people are slowly making up for our government’s dereliction of duty through the 34 Million Friends grassroots effort, of which I am cofounder ( We will show that we are saving lives, lessening misery and sending a nice message to the world, and especially to the world’s women.
