Thank you, dear friend

My dear friend David Osborn died recently. So much local history resonates with his passing.

I recall the many delightful events produced at the AVM (Miner’s Foundry) by David and his partner, Charles Woods. Among them were turn-of-the-century Valentine’s exhibits, scale-model rooms and buildings, Sunday brunches, teas, concerts, wonderful holiday dinners with music and the annual Teddy Bear Convention. I will always remember David’s enthusiasm for each project, his gracious manner, and quick wit.

How many lives were touched by these endeavors? Shortly after my arrival here 20 years ago, I was given a warm reception and the opportunity to present a “debut concert” with the Berkeley Mandolin Ensemble at the AVM, the first of many memorable collaborations with David and Charles. How many other new arrivals and fledgling organizations have been sheltered and nurtured by them? How many of our mature and enduring groups owe something – or a great deal – to early sustenance at the AVM?

The Osborn-Woods contributions to the area are legion. Their gifts of foresight and creativity helped transform Nevada City from a sleepy mother lode town in the 1950s-1960s to one with the thriving cultural life we now experience.

Thank you, David, for the 45 years you gave us here.
