Ten commandments of county property rights

The last several weeks of reading The Union have clued me in on exactly what this property rights fuss is all about.

1. If I am a developer, any project I propose has the right to be built;

2. If the community doesn’t want 7,500 new homes or a mall in the neighborhood, they will have to pay me not to build it;

3. If I sell houses, I have the right to cut down the trees of my neighbor in order to maximize the value of my homes;

4. If I cut trees, I have the right to clearcut the land even if it pollutes the water or causes mudslides;

5. If I am a business owner, I have the right to use the Chamber of Commerce as my own personal fund-raising vehicle;

6. If I disagree with my political opponents, I have the right to sneak up to houses in the night and steal their yard signs;

7. However, I also have the right to display my own billboards year-round in a belligerent and ridiculous manner;

8. I have the right to call you a terrorist if I don’t like your environmental positions;

9. Lying about NH 2020 is fine if I am a candidate for supervisor;

10. I have the right to claim that an overwhelmingly popularly elected board doesn’t represent the majority of the county if they don’t agree with the above points.
