Take this opportunity to right a wrong

I invite you to take the opportunity to right a wrong. Mr. Bush has decided to veto the $34 million contribution that was approved by both houses to the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. The reason given is that some of the money may be used to support coerced abortions in China, despite a recent State Department investigation finding “no evidence” that UNFPA has knowingly supported or participated in a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization in China.

The UNFPA provides family planning, pre and post-natal care and STD prevention and treatment. It does not fund abortion services anywhere. It estimates that this 12.5 percent reduction in their funds will result in 2 million unwanted pregnancies, 800,000 abortions, 4,700 maternal deaths and 77,000 infant deaths.

Two Americans have begun a campaign called “34 million Friends of UNFPA” encouraging 34 million people to send $1 each to the United Nations (FPA) at 220 E. 42nd St., New York, NY 10017 (www.unfpa.org)

I just sent in my donation for $50 because overpopulation and misery are more important priorities for me than the $100 million the Bush administration is planning to spend on the unproven benefits of “marriage promotion.”
