SYRCL is owed Bedwell apology

Many thanks to SYRCL director Janet Cohen for her excellent Other Voices column (“Settling the $100 million question,” Dec. 24) clarifying how SYRCL has acted in partnership with private and public agencies to attract grant monies to protect the Yuba watershed.

Unlike the ugly and misleading letters falsely accusing SYRCL, Cohen’s intent was clearly to educate the public on both the funding process and the extent to which Nevada County has benefitted through the efforts of this worthy nonprofit organization. Truly a class act, with not a bit of mudslinging.

As noted, SYRCL simply acts as a conduit in obtaining and channeling grant monies, rather than being their recipient. Readers should note that, were it not for SYRCL, these resources would very likely have gone to urban organizations with the clout and organization to attract funds badly needed by rural communities. What an invaluable service SYRCL has provided to our community!

Drew Bedwell has clearly violated his position as county supervisor in trying to mislead the public on this important issue. Whether he acted from maliciousness or outright ignorance, he owes both SYRCL and his constituents an apology.
