Swarthout’s priorities

Does City Councilmember Lisa Swarthout represent the interests of the whole community or the interests of developers?

At the Jan. 24 meeting, Swarthout divulged her desire to lower the level of service standards for some failed intersections and to exempt the disastrous Idaho Maryland-East Main intersection from our existing traffic regulations.

On Oct. 29, 2004, The Union ran a story stating, “While giving guidance on three proposed commercial projects … a veteran Planning Commissioner (Swarthout) was also having her home remodeled by the contractor handling the proposals.” Swarthout “gave input into how the projects get final approval.” Her contractor stated he “rarely does residential projects … I basically do that kind of stuff for friends.”

Swarthout’s contractor (Keoni Allen) was, and still is, president of Nevada County Contractors Association and a major commercial developer in Grass Valley; the same developer who recently stated in The Union, “We need to lower our expectations about traffic;” the same developer who needs our traffic standards lowered and an exemption from the existing traffic rules for the Idaho Maryland/East Main intersection so his new, proposed development project can avoid the current rules and an EIR.

Whose interests does Swarthout really represent?
