Sutherland not up to handling county’s finances

I was really happy to see Robin Sutherland finally disclose her past chronic, fiscal irresponsibility. Phew! Voters of District 4 can now breathe easy! Robin has finally confessed that she can’t even balance her own checkbook, so why should the residents of Nevada County let her balance ours? Electing Robin Sutherland as District 4 Supervisor would be like hiring Enron’s accounting firm – Arthur Anderson- as the county’s financial advisors.

I understand that many people have unfortunate circumstances in their lives such as bankruptcy, tax liens, and delinquent property tax payments. However, these issues cannot be swept under the carpet when one seeks a public office. Sutherland’s claim that, “I do not intend to address or talk about these issues again,” is not a decision a candidate for public office can make.

What Ms. Sutherland apparently does not understand is that it is the right and duty of the electorate to scrutinize a candidate’s qualifications for public office. Since Sutherland has no experience in public service, we must look to the basic qualifications for the job of supervisor, such as fiscal responsibility, to make our decision.

Voters and taxpayers deserve to know if a candidate for county supervisor has the experience to manage a $130 million annual budget. It is obvious that Robin Sutherland does not. If the voters of District 4 feel this is an important qualification for county supervisor, perhaps they should consider another candidate.
