Support urged for North Star House

various authors

On May 25, the Board of Supervisors will vote on whether or not to continue grant funding received from the state and a bequest from the wonderful Mr. Dryden Wilson to the North Star House preservation project.

It is so important that this funding continue. The North Star House is an irreplaceable historic resource. It has everything – a tie to our mining history, a past resident who was a renowned writer and illustrator (Mary Hallock Foote), a beautiful location, significant architecture, and a world famous designer (Julia Morgan of Hearst Castle fame).

If we can restore the home and grounds to their former glory, we will all be able to feel pride that our generation accomplished this farsighted project. Please join me in asking the board to continue funding this excellent public project.

I recently visited the North Star House renovation site. How impressive! Thanks to county-granted funds, the house has been saved and renovation has begun. The potential is obvious. This house, designed by the famed Julia Morgan and once the center of one of the most important gold mines in the state, will be a prized community asset when work is complete. And visitors from around the world will visit it along with our other Mother Lode historic sites. I would strongly support continuance of the county grant funding.
