‘Super Size Me’

On the coattails of our local meltdown, a recent best seller, “Fast Food Nation,” and the alarming present overweight/obesity statistics (65 percent U.S. adults, 35 percednt children and climbing) comes a fast-paced, entertaining and educational documentary, “Super Size Me.”

The documentary won at January’s Sundance Film Festival. By “coincidencea” weeks later, McDonalds drops the supersize menu and adds healthy salad choices.

Morgan Spurlock, a lanky stunt show host for MTV, produced, directed, and starred in this gutsy film, where he subjected himself to an exclusive one-month diet of McDonalds, which includes supersized portions when asked. He consulted with three doctors and a nutritionist ahead of time, and none of them predicts the diet will have much effect on his healthy body.

The results, medically tested and measured, prove them all wrong. His weight balloons, his cholesterol skyrockets and at one point a doctor refers to his liver as critical, cardiovascular at risk. His mood and libido drop drastically.

The film also sidesteps to the marketing practices of fast food, school lunches, and associated behaviors. This doctor claims it educational, a laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes cry, must-see for the community, families, and the school board.
