Our likes and dislikes for certain colors is a personal, subjective preference. I was therefore shocked to learn that in a free society we have allowed the City of Grass Valley the power to dictate those decisions on our behalf. It far exceeds the constitutional powers of government to make laws for the health, safety and welfare of our society.

A few years back I ran into a similar situation with the county when we were considering buying a parcel in a new subdivision. Our plans were to construct a white house with a rose garden. Sadly I was told by the developer that we couldn’t do that because as one of its conditions the county had required that the CC&Rs require that all structures be earth tone in color and only landscaped with native vegetation.

Nevada County boasts of its roots in Victorian heritage. Has any of these people been to San Francisco lately and viewed the myriad of colors used on its acclaimed and notable Victorian homes?
