Standout Smith

Many Mahalo’s to The Union Sports staff for your wonderful article on Tyler Smith. Although I am extremely prejudiced, being Tyler’s aunt, I agree and have always believed him to be an outstanding athlete and human being. It was my hope to see Tyler play his senior year at NU (my alma mater). So although I am not able to do that, I am very thankful for the wonderful article. Thank you for bringing me a little bit closer to Grass Valley and Tyler.

Stadium renamed

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants’ ballpark is changing its name to AT&T Park beginning in March.

The name change announced Friday gives the stadium its third identity since the ballpark opened in 2000 and follows SBC Communications Inc.’s acquisition of AT&T Corp. in November. SBC changed its name to AT&T after the merger.

The Giants stadium was originally called Pacific Bell Park and was later renamed SBC Park.

Season forfeited

REDWOOD CITY – A successful boys high school basketball team must forfeit all of its games and its coach has been fired after two players were found to be ineligible, a newspaper reported.

Sequoia High was in the midst of its second 20-plus win season. But the disclosure that two players lived outside San Mateo County forced the forfeiture and the dismissal of head coach Pete Simos, the San Mateo County Times reported.

“Rather than let the CCS (Central Coast Section) investigate the matter and decide sanctions, I, as principal, along with our student records officer, the Redwood City police and our vice principals, decided to take our own actions,” principal Morgan Marchbanks said Thursday.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
