Spin doctors hard at work

It’s amazing how some people will take a couple of facts, then spin them into yarns of fiction.

On Dec. 20, a letter writer attacked my cartoon depicting Drew Bedwell submitting his NH 2020 petition to the Board of Supervisors. This letter writer states the text of the wrong petition. Drew’s first petition was rejected by the County Council because a nongovernmental entity cannot place an advisory directly on the ballot. (“NH 2020 petition invalidated,” The Union, June 16, 2001.)

Due to the shortage of funds and time to obtain the legal assistance needed to draft an ordinance initiative, Drew and supporters decided to submit a popular petition to the BOS, to have them place NH 2020 on the ballot.

The BOS ignored this 8,700-signature petition, which reads as follows: “We, the people of Nevada County, California, respectfully submit this petition and request that the Board of Supervisors prepare an advisory ballot initiative to allow the citizens of Nevada County the right to decide either for or against NH 2020 in the March, 2002, election.”

It seems odd to me that someone would go to all this effort to look up the text of a rejected petition and then write this tale of fiction.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
