Spare the rod, spoil the child

I’m writing to you out of dismay and to bring to light the grave injustice that Child Protective Services (CPS) is doing to our county. The organization was formed to protect children from abusive parents and to remove children to safety.

After a brief encounter with the organization (over a bruise on my stepson’s backside which he received from a spanking), I realized that the CPS workers are in many cases overstepping their mandate and causing parents to be afraid to punish their children, thus resulting in children being out of control.

I don’t claim to be the best parent in the world, but I am far from being “abusive,” and I think I know what abusive is: I was formerly an anger management counselor and a victim of child abuse. The child received the spanking only after exhausting every other possible approach to correct the problem. I am truly disturbed by this continued abuse of authority and the disruptive after-affects it has had on my family and I’m sure many other families in our county. CPS needs to focus on real abuse issues, and quit abusing its authority.
