Snow day a tough call

The decision to call a snow day is never easy. Mother Nature rarely listens to the weatherman, and when she does, it is usually to alter the times just enough to make him look silly. Once the die is cast, Murphy (of Murphy’s Law) takes over. Add to that the fact that some of the buses have to pick up their students almost an hour before school begins, and you have an almost impossible decision to make. Many high school students were already on their way to school on Friday before the first snowflake fell.

Last year the newspaper was full of letters condemning the district for calling a snow day on a day that the snow never showed up. This year it is the reverse. The moral of the story is that the district can’t please all of the people, all of the time – no one can. When Maggie Deetz took this job, there wasn’t room in the budget for a crystal ball or a hot line to Mother Nature. Let’s give her a break.
