Regarding the Board of Supervisors recent stalemate over rezoning, there is no God-given right that if you buy land somewhere, it will remain with the present zoning classification or be rezoned to your benefit. That’s why it’s called land “speculation.” You gamble that someday you will be able to sell the agricultural swampland you bought dirt-cheap and rake in the money after the county rezones it to “A-1 Strip-mall.”

Indeed, the supervisors’ chambers sits on some boggy land sold to the county by speculators. Of course, it helps if you have cronies on the BOS who believe that all land should be subdivided into smaller parcels, thereby guaranteeing greater returns on investments. This is also the same greedy self-interested philosophy that shoots down a scenic Highway 174 proposal and NH 2020 – it might delay lucrative zoning reclassification.

To pay for the environmental degradation, crime and congestion resulting from the all the proposed subdivisions, I suggest casinos be built at Nevada County gateways at Highways 20, 49, 80, and 174 with a slot machine for every new home built in the county in order to generate the necessary tax revenue to support the massive development.
