As a regular traveler on Highway 49, I appreciate the police patrols and other efforts to slow down traffic and reverse the rising incidence of accidents and fatalities. However, I find the suggestions of expensive lane barriers premature when more productive means to reduce accidents have not been tried.

I suggest an age-old solution – highly visible, imposing signs. Erect large road signs just outside of McKnight and Lake of the Pines that, in large letters, read “Speed Limits Strictly Enforced,” “Violators Prosecuted to the Full Extent of the Law.” If legal, you might even add “Speeding Fines Doubled in this Zone.” Signs are cheap, effective, work 24 hours a day and can only add muscle to the considerable efforts of our hard working Highway Patrol officers.
