Shame on Riordan

Regarding The Union’s editorial of July 15, maybe Mr. Riordan shouldn’t be fired for his remark to little Isis, but he certainly needs some serious training in being a responsible adult.

I’m glad that Isis comes from a loving family and has the self-confidence to fend off a remark like that from an authority figure. However, Mr. Riordan didn’t know that when he made the remark. Had this child come from a less loving family, his remark would be just another figurative nail in the coffin of her potential.

No adult should call any child “stupid” or “dirty.” Have we learned nothing as a society about child abuse? Ask any child-abuse survivor about it. Emotional abuse is no better than physical abuse. Shame on Mr. Riordan and shame on The Union for making light of his ugly behavior!
