Regarding the Community Partners Funding Request, 2006-’07 Budget:

It’s hard for seniors in Nevada County to believe that the Senior Citizens Foundation of Western Nevada County’s request for funding of space costs and home-delivered meals amounting to $22,000 has been recommended for zero funding by the budget subcommittee. This committee consists of two county supervisors and two paid staff.

On the other hand, the full request of $225,600 for the Wine Association, the Economic Resource Council and the Joint Nevada County Chambers of Commerce has been recommended to be granted in full.

The services provided for seniors, many of whom are living at or below the poverty level, are important to their well-being. I’m an active senior who home-delivers meals to people who are unable physically, financially or both to provide their own. For some seniors, the center is their only means to socialize and get needed legal and health advice.

Some of our seniors fought in one or two wars and, like myself, have paid taxes to this county for two and three decades. I hope the budget committee will reconsider and recommend the full amount be granted to the Senior Citizens Foundation.

There will be a Board of Supervisors’ meeting at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. I hope many of you readers will attend.
