Second-rate enterprise

The Union’s self-congratulatory column, “The Voice of Freedom-2004,” was a sham. In yet another devious attempt to claim credit it does not deserve. The Union management would have you believe it is “…one of the few newspapers in the United States that tries to print all the letters it receives …” Not in my experience.

In the last two months, I have had two letters rejected, and several others have had this experience, as well. First, after running several disparaging editorials about Bruce Conklin, The Union management denied letters-of-protest to any writer also submitting a campaign letter for any candidate. Why? Because Rich Somerville counted letters protesting their Conklin columns as campaign letters, thus limiting the public’s response!

After the election, I wrote a letter informing the public of this manipulative policy regarding election letters, but Somerville and Ackerman jointly refused to publish it. In fact, Ackerman stated bluntly that he can “… refuse any letter, with or without cause.”

But why is The Union management so frightened of standing behind its editorial decisions? Is this integrity?

The Union can make all the phony claims it wants, but until its editors get the guts to play fair and tolerate dissent, it will remain a second-rate enterprise.
