Schools seek docents for art instruction

Nevada County schools are seeking volunteers to present the popular Art Docent Program in K-6 classrooms. Free training sessions are offered Sept. 23-26 at the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools’ office.

Docents visit classrooms about once a month to make a 20- to 40-minute presentation of thematic visual art prints. Using discussion, games and other activities, docents help children describe what they see in artwork; analyze how artists use color, shape and line in compositions; interpret moods, feelings and emotions expressed by artists; and learn biographical and historical information about artists, their styles, media and artistic purpose.

The program reaches approximately 6,000 students in the Grass Valley, Nevada City, Union Hill, Pleasant Ridge and Pleasant Valley school districts, as well as in Chicago Park, Clear Creek, Ready Springs, Sierra Christian and Mount St. Mary’s schools.

Contact Nevada County School arts liaison Paul Harrar at 478-6400, ext. 212.
