Scary Smith secrecy

County Clerk-Recorder Kathleen Smith’s remarks about her sudden staff changes are very disturbing.

According to The Union, Smith wouldn’t name her replacements for four vacated positions because of “privacy in personnel issues.” Sorry, but employee privacy applies primarily to grievances and performance reviews. Taxpayers have the right to know the identities of public servants, including replacement employees as well as the friend Smith allegedly hired to train poll workers.

If Smith refuses to reveal their names, she is either ignorant in her role as a government manager or trying to conceal something. Neither alternative reassures me as to Smith’s competence.

Even scarier is her admission that she “would not know whether (she) had gone over budget until after the election.” Hello? How can she not know what she’s spending or planning to spend? Smith’s claim that she is “within the guidelines of the election law” doesn’t cut it. The fact that an expense is legal doesn’t mean it is a good use of public funds.

The county Board of Supervisors appointed this out-of-towner to her post even though we reportedly had a highly qualified candidate already on staff. Voters deserve a better explanation than what we’ve been given so far.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
